This brief analysis shows there have been 801 deaths in the Black ethnic group as of April 17, accounting for 5.8% of COVID-19 deaths. Using NHS England and ONS data, Statista compared the number of COVID-19 deaths in BAME groups compared to their proportion of the country’s total population. Excess deaths are 1.6 times higher for the Mixed Any Other Background population. Excess deaths are 4.3 times higher for the Black African population, 2.5 times for the Black Caribbean population, and 7.3 times higher for Black Other Background individuals. expected) are around 1.5 times higher than expected for the Indian population, 2.8 times higher for the Pakistani population, and 3 times higher in Bangladeshis. It is important to note that compared to the White British population per capita deaths are markedly greater in Indian, Other Black, Black Carribbean and Other Ethnic group (see the figure below, but note these data are not adjusted for potential explanatory factors such as age, geography, occupational exposure etc.).Īnalysis of NHS England hospital death data shows excess deaths vary by BAME group (See table below, final column on right). For example, per capita, Black Carribean deaths are over twice those of Bangladeshi and Pakistani populations. ![]() With data on COVID-19 in BAME populations emerging daily, this rapid review aimed to evaluate the evidence on plausible associations between ethnicity and COVID-19 incidence and adverse health outcomes in the general population and people working in health and social care.Īn ongoing Google Scholar literature search has been conducted since the COVID-19 outbreak began, and this has been updated through publications on MedRxiv preprint and social media.Īnalysis of hospital death data in England by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) show deaths per capita are not consistent across BAME groups, and they are markedly greater in Black Carribean and Black Other groups compared to all other ethnicities (except ‘Other ethnic group’). There are also concerns that healthcare and other key workers who belong to BAME groups are particularly at risk. For example, observational data from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre, show a third of COVID-19 patients admitted to critical care units are from BAME groups. Worryingly there is early evidence of an association between ethnicity and COVID-19 incidence and adverse health outcomes. The UK has a large and diverse Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic community (BAME), which account for around 14% of the population in England and Wales. For Health and Care workers, there are increased health and care setting exposure risks. There may be a number of contributing factors in the general population such as overrepresentation of BAME populations in lower socio-economic groups, multi-family and multi-generational households, co-morbidity exposure risks, and disproportionate employment in lower band key worker roles. ![]() The exact reasons for this increased risk and vulnerability from COVID-19 in BAME populations are not known. Similarly, adverse outcomes are seen for BAME patients in intensive care units and amongst medical staff and Health and Care Workers. But the last four years have revealed its hollowness. “Truth Trumps Lies.” That motto, needling yet reassuring, has been a popular hashtag ever since Donald Trump’s election in 2016. His book The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Nicholas Carr is a writer covering technology, economics and culture. In a manner that John Adams might have found satisfying, we have learned that internalized constitutional norms matter more than any external checks. And, finally, when it mattered, election officials, at a distance from the White House, conducted a fair vote. The armed forces declined to embrace Trump’s proposed occupation of liberal cities over the summer. He tried hard, but Trump ultimately couldn’t find a prosecutor to indict Joe Biden and his family. ![]() What really mattered, in the end, was a different set of checks, upheld not by a document but by people: namely, the independence of federal prosecutors, the neutrality of the armed forces and the independence of the electoral system. Congress and the judiciary asserted limited control at best even impeachment turned out to be just another party-line vote. Before Trump, it was widely thought that the written Constitution and its fabled “separation of powers” had spared the United States from a similar fate.īut over the past four years, we’ve watched constitutional checks repeatedly fail to control the president, trumped by party loyalty. That’s the fate that befell, among others, the Roman, Spanish, German and Russian republics. Most republics, even the best of them, have struggled when confronted with a nationalist leader who shows up in bad economic times, blames everything on immigrants and foreigners, and promises to restore greatness. We’ve learned something important about America’s resistance to an authoritarian takeover. Tim Wu is a law professor at Columbia University and the author, recently, of The Curse of Bigness: Antitrust in the New Gilded Age. What is the infrastructure that allows the hardships of so many to remain invisible? But how long has it taken us to confront this reality? The astonishment among white cultural elites (myself included) at the extent of police brutality until cellphone video cameras came along leaves me questioning what our democracy is actually built on. George Floyd’s killing and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement this past summer means it is no longer possible to ignore the centuries of violent dehumanization of Black people in this country. Those of us in the cultural elite are inexcusably unaware of the challenges and perspectives of many others in this country who feel they are not getting what they deserve. We are removed not just from rural residents. The shock at the closeness of the 2020 race suggests we are still unaware of the depth of this resentment. I became aware just how surprised many in the cultural elite were about the challenges facing rural communities and the fact that many people living in these places feel they are not getting their fair share of attention, resources or respect. When Donald Trump won in 2016, partly by tapping into this resentment, people turned to me for answers. There is a deep well of people in this country who are sure the system is not working for them, and we seem to be only coming around to recognizing how deep it goes.įour years ago, I published a book about the feelings of resentment many rural people in Wisconsin felt toward the urban elite. By cultural elite, I mean those of us who create the knowledge and the media content people consume, as well those of us in positions of political and other decision-making power. The past few years have taught me just how removed the cultural elite in the United States is from many of the other people in this nation. ![]() She is author of The Politics of Resentment: Rural Consciousness in Wisconsin and the Rise of Scott Walker. And centrists in his party are more comfortable embracing his programs. Obama's ascent represented a tectonic shift for multiracial democracy that triggered a racial backlash Democrats with divided constituencies sought distance. The different backgrounds of Obama and Biden have also shaped their political realities. Joe Blewitt and his sister Laurita have met Mr Biden several times and have already visited him in the White House in his role as vice-president under Barack Obama. "We cannot make either of those mistakes again." And then we spent a year and a half negotiating on something good, the ACA, but didn't get anything else done," he said. In the 2020 presidential election, Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, defeated incumbents Donald Trump and Mike Pence. Biden was a close counselor to Obama during his two terms as Obama's vice president. "In 2009 and '10, we did not put together a robust recovery bill, and we stayed in recession for too many years. Barack Obama chose Biden as his running mate in the 20 presidential elections. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., identified two lessons from the Obama era, when he was the caucus' third-in-command: Err on the side of going big on crisis relief, and don't waste time. But Joe Biden and his administration and the Democrats - this time they know what's coming." The Obama administrations ability to stop the swine flu came down to luck, one former aide says. "You see Mitch McConnell's Republicans running the same playbook. "The biggest lesson learned is that Mitch McConnell doesn't act in good faith," said David Litt, a former speechwriter for Obama. Having served in the United States Senate for 36 years, followed by two terms as vice president under Barack Obama, he’s no stranger to American voters, who elected him as the 46 th President of. Two vice presidents, Hannibal Hamlin and Henry Wallace, were dropped from the ticket after their first term, only to see their successors become president. those mistakes again'Īnother difference is how the two presidents dealt with the opposition leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who held the same position in Obama's early years and famously said in 2010 that his top priority was to make him a one-term president. Barack Obama jokingly referred to Joe Biden as vice-president on his return to the White House for the first time since 2017. ![]() "You have a lot of veterans from the Obama administration who have reflected on some of the shortcomings in the policy and political approach and are trying to showcase that they're correcting for them." 'We cannot make. "The instincts of that administration were: We're not going be populist-oriented or interested in taking on big fights with capital," said Faiz Shakir, an adviser to Sen. Some progressives say Obama needlessly picked business-friendly officials for top positions, such as Summers and former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who contributed to a culture of hesitation to take on Wall Street and avoided simple populism on issues like foreclosure relief. ![]() ![]() It is He Who got out the Unbelievers among the People of the Book from their homes at the first gathering (of the forces).Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, let it declare the Praises and Glory of Allah: for He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Transmission is the most Mac-like, with a gorgeous interface and Apple-like simplicity – not that Apple would ever make a BitTorrent app it won’t even allow them on the App Store. Once it’s found them it will begin downloading the file. This accepts the file and logs on to peer-to-peer networks to hunt for other people sharing the file. To download a torrent you must download first a torrent client. ![]() It has something of a bad reputation because of its association with file-sharing sites like The Pirate Bay, but the technology is often used to share less controversial large files, such as software updates, Linux installation distributions, and open-source or copyright-free programs, movies, music and other large files. BitTorrent is an efficient way to share large files across multiple computers. One person has to seed the whole of the file in the first place for other to share it. These parts are then shared until you have the whole of the file, at which point you can continue sharing the file (known as seeding). You download a small file, called a torrent, and this enables you to connect to other computers with the same file and download parts of it from each other. BitTorrent enables people to share large files with each other using a peer-to-peer network, which means they share parts of the file with each other, rather than downloading the whole file from a central location (such as iTunes). The torrent client then downloads a larger file from the internet using a process known as BitTorrent. Be sure to download the app from trusted sources in order to avoid malware.Torrents are small files that you can download and open in a torrent client. You can download it directly from its official website. Transmission is a free open-source app available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. These include an option to set default trackers, support for IPv6 blocklists, and a feature to omit potentially-identifying information, such as the user-agent when creating a new torrent. There are other new features coming with the update as well. With a sleek and simple interface, Transmission meets or exceeds Apple UI standards while using native features. This isn’t some cross-platform app that treats macOS as an afterthought. Transmission on macOS is a truly native and polished experience. For MacBook users, this means that the software will use less power, resulting in longer battery life. That’s because the new version of Transmission runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs.Īpps that run natively on Apple Silicon can take full advantage of the M1 and M2 family of chips. But as noted by MacMagazine, this update is even bigger for macOS users. More specifically, the app’s release notes say that Transmission 4 uses 50% less CPU and 70% less memory than Transmission 3. As a result, Transmission 4 use less hardware resources such as RAM and CPU. Under the hood, the app’s codes have been completely modernized, as it is now based on C++ instead of C90. Although the interface still looks quite familiar, it has been tweaked with a more modern look. However, the update is now available to all users. Version 4.0 of the app had been in beta testing since last year. These include a refreshed design and native support for Apple Silicon Macs. This week, Transmission 4 was finally released to the public, and it comes with some major improvements. ![]() Transmission is one of the most popular multi-platform BitTorrent apps.
